Usamos o Past Simple para ações que aconteceram e terminaram no passado.

Usamos o Past Continuous para falar sobre uma ação que estava acontecendo em determinado momento no passado.

Structure

was / were + verb-ing

I was sleeping.

She was taking a shower when the alarm went off.

10. Past Simple × Past Continuous

Esta é a principal diferença da aula.

Past Continuous

Ação em andamento.

I was walking through the city.

Past Simple

Evento que aconteceu.

I saw an interesting building.

Combine:

I was walking through the city when I saw an interesting building.


11. The "Background + Event" Rule

Uma maneira fácil de entender:

Past Continuous = background

O que estava acontecendo.

Past Simple = event

O que aconteceu.

Example

We were having dinner when the lights went out.

Background:

were having dinner

WHEN

Geralmente introduz o evento que interrompe outra ação.

I was sleeping when the phone rang.

We were driving when it started to rain.


WHILE

Geralmente introduz uma ação em progresso.

While I was sleeping, the phone rang.

While we were driving, it started to rain.

Também podemos ter duas ações simultâneas:

While I was taking photos, my friend was shopping.

Later, we continued exploring the city. We visited several interesting places and tried some traditional Portuguese food.

The trip was fantastic. The best part was discovering the city on foot. I'd definitely go back.
